Austrian node offers e-learning courses on safe web 2.0 use

Saferinternet.at supports teachers with online further education courses and a new teachers' handbook

The Austrian node Saferinternet.at is delivering e-learning courses for teachers this summer, as part of a school focus on web 2.0 safety issues.
E-learning plays an increasingly important role in Austrian schools and is actively promoted by the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture. The role of e-learning can be twofold:
  • E-learning as a methodology for classroom activities
  • E-learning as valuable tool for teachers' further training due to its flexibility in time and space

E-Learning often uses typical web 2.0 tools such as Wikis and Blogs. For this reason teachers become more and more aware of web 2.0 issues such as privacy, copyright and source criticism. Pupils face the same safety challenges online on a daily basis, given the popularity of social networking platforms.

Against this background the Austrian node supports teachers who wish to discuss safe web 2.0 use in the classroom. In the summer of 2008 Saferinternet.at is starting to offer e-learning courses for Austrian teachers. These courses are being run in cooperation with the largest Austrian e-learning network "e-LISA academy".

The setting is a four weeks long distance course without "face-to-face" meetings using the e-learning platform "Moodle". The courses have a collaborative format, where the theoretical input of the trainers, moderated communication among participants and individual feedback complement each other.

In addition Saferinternet.at will start the cost-free distribution of the new teachers' handbook "First think, then click - how to use web 2.0 safely" to all Austrian schools in September. It includes all relevant information about web 2.0 safety and concrete classroom activities.

Saferinternet.at's web 2.0 school activities are supported by the Federal Ministry for Education, the Arts and Culture and Telekom Austria TA AG, the largest Austrian Internet provider.
