SAFER INTERNET DAY

Safer Internet Day: educating young people in Europe

Young people across Europe are in urgent need of education in using mobile and internet technologies according to a recent Insafe survey of more than 12,000 under 18 year-olds. Social networking tools are particularly problematic: 56% of young people surveyed choose to make their social networking profiles on sites such as MySpace public, and share a great deal of personal details. To monitor and tackle the issue, the pan-European Insafe network organized on 6 February, the fourth edition of Safer Internet Day, once again held under the patronage of Viviane Reding, European Commissioner for Information Society and Media.

Celebrating Safer Internet Day across the world

Almost 40 countries will participate in the fourth edition of Safer Internet Day (SID) which this year takes place on 6 February. The event is organised by European Schoolnet, coordinator of Insafe, the European safer internet network (www.saferinternet.org). Viviane Reding, EU Commissioner for the Information Society and Media is once again patron of Safer Internet Day, as in the past two years.

The highlight of the day will once again be a worldwide blogathon, which will reach Australia on 6th February and progress westward through the day to finish up in the USA and Canada. Following the huge success encountered in 2006, this year's blogathon goes one step further to include the voices of hundreds of youngsters. In the framework of a competition launched in October 2006, more than 200 schools in 25 countries across the globe have been working in pairs, using technology to cross geographical borders, to create internet safety awareness material on one of three themes: e-privacy, netiquette, and power of image. On Safer Internet Day, all of the projects they have produced will be uploaded to the blogathon.

Crossing borders: 2007 Blogathon

Using the internet and other new technologies means we can make and keep contact with people from all over the world to an unprecedented extent. So, this year's blogathon, taking place on Safer Internet Day (6 February 2007), focuses on the topic "Crossing Borders". What do we get out of virtually going beyond our national boundaries? Living and learning internationally via the internet brings a lot more excitement, friendship and knowledge into our lives. It leads us to reflect on our preconceived ideas and opens our minds to a whole new world of possibilities, broadening our horizons and building bridges between people and cultures in a way that was never before possible. It means that we need to carefully navigate the fine line between our own rights, freedom, privacy and the rights of others. The Safer Internet Day blogathon brings together children, teachers and organisations from across the world to share their views.

The Blogathon is open to the public!

SAFER INTERNET DAY 2007 COMPETITION

The Safer Internet Day 2007 Competition winners announced

On February 6 Mrs Viviane Reding, Commissioner for Information Society and Media opened the 2007 Blogathon with the announcement of the winning teams in the 4 competition categories: e-privacy, netiquette, power of image and innovation. The participants to the Safer Internet Day 2007 Competition crossed geographical boundaries with the help of the Internet. At the beginning of February they uploaded their projects on the 2007 Blogathon.

e-Privacy award: The Polish school Zespol Szkol Handlowo-Ekonomicznych w Bialymstoku teamed up with the Bulgarian school PGGPT "Nikola Vaptsarov" to carry off the e-privacy award with an entry entitled "Modern communication tools - for and against our privacy" .
Netiquette award: The Greek school Athens College worked together with the Czech school ZS TGM Mnichovice on a project transposing traditional values into the cyberworld in the prize-winning "e-values".
Power of Images award: the Polish school Gimnazjum Nr 6 w Żorach, together with their Greek counterpart, the Primary School of Panagia Thassos, elaborated their winning project on "The picture as the vehicle of bad and good news"
Innovation award: Semley Primary School from the United Kingdom and the Athens-Chilesburg Elementary School from the United States were selected as the most innovative entry for the project entitled "The Power of Image".

BLOG ON: Crossing borders with the Safer Internet Day 2007 Competition

Children in 25 countries around the world have registered to take part in a global Blogathon on February 6 to celebrate Safer Internet Day 2007. Young people are interacting in dynamic and very personal ways with their close friends, with family and with chosen "online friends". Children, having a heightened need to communicate and to be included in social networks, are once again pushing the boundaries of technology to create virtual "social networks" that are transforming the way we live. These new social contexts and platforms for expression make it necessary to re-think our values in terms of human relations, be it through the intermediary of technology.

4 winning pairs will be announced on Safer Internet Day 2007, 6 February.
