The three-minute animation tackles the parental concern of ‘Who are your kids talking to online?’, providing practical tips for parents to help their children stay safe.

At the end of the animation, eight informative tip sheets give practical advice on how to deal with a variety of issues that youngsters might encounter online, including: Privacy on social networks, Online gaming, Blocking, Risks online, Online friends, Meeting strangers, Personal information, and Online reputation.

Facts shared throughout the animation draw on findings from the EU Kids Online Study. Professor Sonia Livingstone, Professor of Social Psychology at the London School of Economics (LSE) and Director of the Study said:

“I really welcome the development of this lively and engaging resource, as it does a great job of informing parents about what their children are doing online. It’s important to debunk some myths and realise that, for most children, the internet is far more an opportunity than a source of worry.

“This animation gives some helpful tips, based on the specific insights from our pan-European survey of 25,000 children and parents. The idea is that rather than feeling excluded or worrying in private, parents can find a way to share, discuss or join in with some of their children’s experience online and so guide them all the more effectively.”

Further information and reports from the EU Kids Online project can be found at www.eukidsonline.net.

The animation is supported by the European Commission and the Confederation of Family Organisations in the European Union (COFACE). Speaking of the resource, Agnes Uhereczky, COFACE Director, said:

“All over Europe, parents worry about their children being online. They worry about the time they spend online, the content they are viewing, the risks they may be exposed to…

“The ‘Digital Universe of Your Children’ covers all the basics to reassure and empower parents with regard to their children's activities online. It busts a few common myths and provides external links to practical tools and information about specific topics to help parents strengthen their digital parenting skills.

“COFACE very much welcomes this initiative and will promote it via its website to all family organisations and families across Europe.”
