Insafe Newsletter
Issue 25: May 2007, Copyright and digital rights |
Welcome to the Insafe Newsletter!
With the advent of the printing press, the book allowed knowledge to spread in a way that had no precedent in human history. Being published became the only available channel through which knowledge could be disseminated. The world of publishing developed into a true industry, dubbed "cultural".
However, as this is currently in the hands of big industrial groups, scientific or school works tend to be published according to financial profitability criteria.
On the other hand, the increasing development of ICT has revolutionised the economics of knowledge. The evolution of the internet shows more and more its capacities to improve the circulation of ideas and the access to knowledge. So far, the adaptation of our legislative environment to the age of the internet focuses on the fight against illicit use of digital contents.
Within the EU Member States the current transposition of the directive of 22 May 2001 on "the harmonisation of certain aspects of copyright and related rights in the information society" leads to a reinforcement of authors' rights to the benefit of copyright holders (editors and producers) of digital content.
Nevertheless, the truth about the stakes of ICT extend beyond this reform. At present, the digitalisation of educational and scientific production allows envisioning a better access to knowledge with marginal costs.
Which are thus the possible online distribution models and the alternatives for the world of publishing? What legal constraints have to be overcome to allow the development of these new usages linked to access to knowledge? And thanks to what tools?
