Reaching teens in Holland: humor and sex is the key to success!
In the case of a campaign targeted at teens, one must think about the right approach. Experts on this matter have advised us not to be too patronizing and to bring the message about with humor, be a bit "over the top" and playful with the subject of sex, since this has proven to be an efficient practice with this particular target group. Below you will find two examples of successful campaigns for teens:
Posters Internet SOA Campaign: It all started with a study of Mijnkindonline (famous Dutch website for parents and partner of Digibewust) and Rutgers Nisso Group (Knowledge center on sexuality) on teens' wanted and unwanted sexual experiences on the internet.
The results of the study was reason enough to start the campaign for teenagers "internetSOA" (literally: Internet Sexually Transmitted Diseases). The campaign stated that just as in the real world, you really can get in trouble when you're not protected. The pay-off is "internetsex, you can get real sick of it!!".
The campaign included TV and radio commercials, free post cards and a website with information about "sexual diseases". Real diseases were transformed into internet diseases in a humouristic way. For example, "Hepatitis" became "Havehertitties" (about unwanted tapes of your webcam strip-act) etc..
The website provides information about the disease, the symptoms and the cure. The campaign was set up together with TV-stations, social networking sites and other websites that are popular amongst teens. In cooperation with Digibewust, posters were printed and sent to all high schools in Holland.
Password campaign for teens: TV spots and freecards In January 2007, the Dutch awareness node started a campaign focusing on the use of strong and safe passwords. Two commercials were created: one about the necessity of keeping your passwords private and another with tips for creating a strong -but at the same time easily remembered passwords. The commercials were broadcast by TMF (the Dutch part of MTV) in commercial breaks throughout the whole month. They were also shown on websites that are popular with teens (as well as being posted on Youtube). At the same time, 250,000 Boomerangcards (freecards available in schools and libraries) were distributed.
The campaign was initiated in a public/private partnership. Several important teens' websites such as popular social networking sites, Habbo Hotel and MSN, asked us to undertake action on this topic. They believe that a lot of problems on their sites could be prevented if people used a strong password and didn't share it with others.
There are lots of complaints concerning the hacking of accounts with all sorts of consequences: change of profile, publication of private information, bullying or threatening other people through the hacked account, money theft etc. Most of the time, this happens because young people use a password that is far too easy to guess and, even worse, they share it with friends.
