Welcome to the Insafe Newsletter!

   Newsletter  Archive

In the September edition of the Insafe Newsletter, our colleagues from Poland stressed the need to promote the use of internet as a teaching tool that has to be made safe. In keeping with this approach, young people benefit from new ways of communicating and learning, while educators use the power of the internet to deliver teaching in more appealing ways to their students.

Making Internet a progress driver as well as a safer place is the responsibility of us all - educators, parents, business managers, government officials as well as young people themselves. Internet has broadened our understanding of reality, however common sense safety rules still apply.

Just as parents would not like their children to talk to strangers on the street, so they shouldn’t let them communicate with strangers on internet. Organisations install physical security measures on their premises to prevent intrusions - the same applies to making corporate information networks safe.

In this Newsletter edition, we wish to point out the importance of cooperation between public institutions and business organisations to increase internet safety and security for society. In Lithuania, for example, a public and private partnership has recently been consolidated by a joint Memorandum on Progress in Network and Information Security, which was signed between the Lithuanian Communications Regulatory Authority, the Lithuanian Banking Association and the ITT Companies’ Association “Infobalt”.

The document serves as a basis for the development and construction of a public culture of network and information security in Lithuania. Under this partnership, 100,000 CDs containing security software packages were produced and distributed in all regions of the country, including rural areas. The goal of this project was to provide tools to enable PC users to take action and protect their computers and the information contained on them.

Such initiatives add substantially to raising general awareness about internet safety. They also serve as a source of inspiration to other organisations in developing and implementing corporate responsibility measures.
