Portugal addresses the lack of national data on Internet safety

At their first meeting in January 2005, Seguranet partners identified an immediate need to discover more about Internet safety issues in Portugal.

Seguranet brings together representatives from Ministry of Education’s Nonio programme for ICT in education and four ICT Competence Centres from different areas of Portugal.

In general, the issue of Internet safety has not been strongly highlighted in Portugal to date. The focus, at least at institutional level, has been to promote the pedagogical advantages of new technologies. However, the generalised access to ICT resources raises concerns about usage of the Internet and preventive measures are required.

One of the Seguranet partners has experience in participating in an Internet safety project entitled Educaunet and another has previously developed content related to Internet safety.

Considering the lack of data, studies or surveys on safety issues at national level, Seguranet partners decided that an online survey of schools should take place as soon as possible. At the same time, each partner will research any existing studies on this issue and gather as much information as possible.

The need to expand the debate and receive contributions for this awareness campaign led to the organisation of a meeting to be held in March 2005. Organisations, companies and media will be invited to discuss the challenges and risks of Internet. As many participants as possible will be involved and every possible contribution identified.
