Launch of new Internet safety tools in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands, a completely revamped portal on Internet safety is launched on Safer Internet Day. A new brochure and children’s book are other tools promoting safer use of the Internet in the country.
On Safer Internet Day, 8 February 2005, the new edition of the Dutch website on safer Internet is launched. The site features a helpdesk, where visitors can ask specific questions regarding Internet safety. This service not only offers tailor-made solutions to specific problems, but also provides insight into the latest Internet difficulties faced by Dutch users.

The portal update follows a second edition of a brochure on safe Internet use, which was launched in January 2005. The brochure provides an updated picture of risks associated with the Internet, such as the growing problem of dialers and spyware. Over 100,000 copies were printed and the brochure is distributed to schools and events as well as online.

Bamber Delver of Dutch children’s consumer organization "De Kinderconsument" has published a new book entitled ‘Safer Internet for kids’. The book informs children, and indirectly their parents and teachers, on the risks they can run when using the Internet.

The book includes children’s drawings, designed to give advice and tips on how to surf the Internet safely. The drawings were entries to a 2004 Safer Internet Day poster competition. The book also highlights many ‘kid friendly’ websites and websites where children can find more information on key issues such as what to do when in trouble during a chat conversation.
