Finnish children have their say on Internet safety

A Finnish website is allowing children to express their views on safer Internet. “Children's voice on the Internet” is an important ingredient in the Save the Children Finland's defence of children's rights.

Save the Children Finland's Children On-Line project launched the Tiukula.fi website for children on 20 November 2004, Universal Children's Day. The idea of the website is to bring forward the ideas and views of 6 to 12 year-old children on the Internet and new media.

While the field of safe Internet closely concerns children, the debate has too often been dominated by adults. The key aim of the website is to address that and to allow the children themselves to make their voices heard.

At present the material on the site consists of children writing on the theme of "Safe Internet". The children’s texts show that they can approach the issue from their own perspective and with their own twist.

The next step is to widen the topics and invite more contributions from children. The themes of these short texts could be "Internet", "The Internet and me", "I like the Internet because…" or "I don't like Internet because…" These texts will be published on the Tiukula.fi website.

Save the Children bases its work on the Convention of the Rights of Child, in which active participation by children is a major principle. Online awareness projects such as the Tiukula.fi website are therefore an important tool in their work defending children’s rights.
