Bad news from down under for lurking internet sharks.
Launch of new Hector's World™ online safety tool. |
Hectors World™ Ltd. in New Zealand has taken the initiative to launch a new web site aimed at kids featuring Hector Protector® the bottlenose dolphin and his under-water friends.
The innovation here is the download of the Hector’s World Safety Button™, a child-activated safety tool which, when installed, allows kids to cover immediately any web page that disturbs them and offers a message encouraging them to get adult help to deal with the issue.
At the same time, the site has animated episodes to view freely online, colour-in story books to download and a number of on-line puzzles for the kids. For teachers, there are resources and lesson plans as well as a teachers' forum where they can discuss the use of these resources and those they've used from elsewhere. The lessons are aimed at three age groups (5-6, 7-8 and 9-11 year old children), each using the 5 episodes.
There is also information for parents to use when talking with their children about the animated episodes so that they can support the cybersafety learning in the episodes.
