The Austrian government and Saferinternet.at intensify internet safety awareness-raising
Internet safety has become a high priority on the political agenda in Austria. Three ministers and two state secretaries together with Saferinternet.at presented a programme of new activities.
Latest numbers from a study conducted by Saferinternet.at and Integral Market Research show that Austrian internet users want more information on internet safety issues. For example, 70 percent wish to have more information on fraudulent online traps, 69 percent on anti-virus measures and 67 percent on e-privacy.
Against this background the Austrian parliament asked in a five-party motion the Federal Government to increase awareness measures on internet safety and to evaluate the existing legal framework.
The Federal Government is relying on its excellent cooperation with the Austrian awareness node for the task of awareness-raising. Together relevant ministries and Saferinternet.at have been developing a broad variety of new information materials and activities. Saferinternet.at also consults the Federal Chancellery on the implementation of future safer internet activities.
On 12 November 2007 a press conference took place with three ministers and two state secretaries. Ronald Hechenberger, project coordinator of Saferinternet.at, was present as an expert. Media activities resulted in broad media coverage of the Austrian awareness node on national prime time television, radio as well as print and online media.
Examples of new information materials and activities:
Teachers’ handbook on fraudulent web services
10 tips for online consumers
Internet safety advice for broadband users and the elderly
First Austrian mobile movie award
