ISPs and the safer internet landscape in the Czech Republic

CZESICON – the Czech Safer Internet Combined Node is trying to establish a regular communication and collaboration with the biggest Czech portals and internet service providers (ISPs).

The biggest Czech ISPs are subsidiaries of multinational companies (O2/Telefonica, UPC, etc.) and they’re all interested in collaborating.

On the other hand, the biggest web portals (Seznam, Centrum, Atlas) in the Czech Republic are quite indifferent so far: any discussion about ethics, self-regulation, moderation of chats or combatting on-line crime are seen as efforts to limit freedom of speech and impose restrictions on their way of conducting business.

There is no association of either Czech ISPs or Czech internet content providers similar to the EuroISPA, for instance. Agreeing upon a large-scale code of conduct seems to be a conflictual issue.

The CZESICON project sees it as a very important mandate to raise awareness of the issue and initiate an efficient consultation process among internet safety stakeholders in the Czech Republic
