SAFT Iceland launches new educational material

SAFT, the internet awareness project in Iceland is launching two new education modules for elementary schools in September. The modules focus on a) ethical behavior on the internet and b) source criticism.

The education modules are designed for ages 9 – 16 with enough flexibility so that they can be used in different contexts, whenever internet use is part of the school work. ICT teachers can use it as part of the ICT education and language or history teachers can use it as part of their lessons.

The net-ethics material focuses on positive behaviour and awareness on how language, symbols and pictures can be used. It covers the main areas of internet and new media use by children and teenagers, such as blogs, chat, e-mails and mobile phones.

The source criticism module is designed to increase awareness on the need to critically look at all online information and can be a tool for teachers that ask their students to do research on the internet or write essays using internet sources.

This new educational material is an addition to SAFT´s already existing material, designed for grades 4 to 6 and distributed to all Icelandic elementary schools in 2005. All the material is designed for easy home-use and is a good basis to be used by parents and others when discussing internet and new media use with children. The publishing and distribution of the education material will take place after a strong media campaign on ethical behaviour on the internet targeted at young people.
