Project EMPOWER

The UK launches Project EMPOWER – a new two year programme to keep children and young people safe and secure online.

The aims of Project EMPOWER are to empower children and young people through information and education and to help make the Internet a safer place.  EMPOWER is a GBP 2 million (EUR 2.9 million) project and will be delivered over two years from 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2009.

The key deliverables from EMPOWER include a new national education and awareness campaign for children, young people, teachers, parents and carers.  This will comprise new educational resources for primary age pupils, teachers and parents and refreshed resources for secondary age students.  EMPOWER will also deliver a programme of events with industry – including the online gaming industry and the financial sector – to make the online environments safer for children and young people and more hostile for child sex offenders.

The Project is being lead by the UK Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre.  CEOP is the UK’s new national centre set up to protect children for sexual exploitation.  CEOP’s remit includes protecting children on the Internet, helping to manage high risk child sex offenders in the community, targeting UK nationals who travel overseas to abuse children and leading work on child trafficking.

CEOP is also the new UK node and the UK member of INSAFE.
