Addressing Web 2.0 in Curriculum
i-SAFE e-Safety curriculum evolves as the Internet evolves, providing revised and updated materials whenever necessary. This article explores ways i-SAFE Inc. can help teachers integrate learning about Web 2.0 safety and responsibility into regular classroom activities. |
Much of the technology-talk these days revolves around the term Web 2.0, which to some teachers is a confusing label. We are often asked, “Is it a new internet?” Web 2.0 isn't an "item" it’s a flexible definition or way of describing the evolution of the Internet from a flat, information resource to an interactive environment. Web 2.0 technologies not only facilitate user participation, but also provide a unique platform in which the world’s youth can celebrate their ingenuity and creativity. Unfortunately, more opportunities for these types of activities necessitate increased attention to cyber safety and responsibility education.
i-SAFE curriculum evolves as the Internet evolves, providing revised and updated materials whenever necessary. Current curriculum offers a new Unit to introduce relevant web 2.0 e-Safety issues, as well as individual Web 2.0-oriented lessons on topics that address safety and responsibility in usage of intellectual property, blogging, social networking, safe Web site design, cell phone use, and other user-generated activities. These materials focus on integrating tips and information while promoting critical thinking about the benefits of the Internet; strategies that do not include fear-based lectures designed to scare students away from being online. This approach is easily integrated into normal classroom activity. For example, if using Web 2.0 technologies such as blog postings to teach, include a lesson that addresses the relevant safety/responsibility issues. Another approach is to think about the online associations to any academic subject that deals with physical-world activities. For example, the study of civics and social responsibility naturally lends itself to integrated lessons on online citizenship in postings and downloading.
As eductors, our challenge is to channel the openness, freedom and collective intelligence that Web 2.0 facilitates, towards good citizenship and empowerment that positively influences today’s youth. i-SAFE offers programs for educators worldwide, including a selection of lessons and student materials that have been translated into French, German, Spanish, Portuguese, and Korean.
