What about Insafe Olympic Games?12 June 2006
Two important events involving young people and new technologies have taken place in Italy in the last months: the Olympic Games of information science, sponsored by UNESCO, and the 8th edition of the Mediashow multimedia Olympic Games. |
The first competition, focusing on advanced skills in information science, was aimed at promoting scientific knowledge of computer tools among students while letting them share human and cultural experiences from all around the world.
The Mediashow participants, on the other hand, tested their abilities in producing various multimedia products (videos, pictures, mp3 files, web sites etc). The objective of the competition was to propose a positive and active role for new technologies in everyday school-life.
During its experience with schools, the EASY team of the Italian awareness node examined whether there was a real gap between teachers and pupils, in regards:
- technical skills
- critical competence
- communication on these themes
EASY focuses on and analyses youngsters’ online behaviour. It addresses young people’s needs in terms of new technologies, as well as the educational needs of parents if they are to help their offspring reflect on these issues.
Inspired by these two events and our organisation’s rationale, we suggest that all members of the Insafe network cooperate to organise an Olympic Games in the safer use of new technologies for young Europeans.
