Wiki platform for students12 June 2006
EDEN offers a wiki platform for students to exchange experiences and create their own contents. This work begins in the classroom with selected schools acting as hubs to a wider network of schools. |
At the EDEN project internet represents an integral part of awareness tools. By using a dedicated wiki platform, students have the possibility to exchange experiences in a protected environment where responsible behaviour is encouraged.
The authentication system is hierarchical, thereby ensuring appropriate scaling as the project gains momentum. An interesting aspect of the system is the way it handles sensitive information: every user is ultimately accountable so as to encourage responsible behaviour, but the nicknames used in the system are not directly coupled to the user’s real name.
Instead, teachers keep track of the students’ names and unique codes while the system keeps track of the association of codes to nicknames. This is clearly explained to students so they will learn to regard their personal information as precious.
The system is now structured in three "virtual classes" (primary, intermediate and secondary schools) and the teaching team involved can register their students to the specific wiki site dedicated to their age group.
