Playing with children for a safer internet – offline
We often talk about interactive games. Does interactive really mean online only? Of course not – interactivity can be achieved without PCs, consoles, TV and other electronic gadgets. Although I may know this, a lot of children will not necessarily understand how that could be. That is why we, in the Insafe node Saferinternet.cz, are trying to address what we might call “traditionally designed activities” but yet making them relevant to our mission of raising awareness on online safety matters. |
One of these offline yet interactive activity – and a very successful one at that - is the Night with Andersen. This event became very popular, crossing the borders of the Czech Republic. This year children spent the night of Friday, March 28 in public libraries. They read, tell and play out stories inspired by the fairytales of Hans Christian Andersen. One of the topics which they were exploring was the theme of using the internet in a safer way.
A traditional event celebrating its 10th anniversary this year is the Czech Bambiriada. It is a chain of events hosted by NGOs for children. It is an opportunity for over one hundred Children and Youth Centres, Associations and similar organisations to show to more than 200,000 visitors (children, young people, parents, politicians, and the whole of society) how they contribute to the joy, personal growth, and meaningful use of children and young people’s leisure time.
This year 28 Czech cities and towns will participate in the event held on 25-28 May. The Czech Safer Internet combined node will be attending the event in Prague inviting children to take part in a special quiz, talking with them and disseminating information about the project in an informal way.
