Young Slovenians appoint safer internet ambassador

On 8 April 2006, the Slovenian Awareness Node SAFE-SI and other partners participated in the twelfth Computer Festival, where pupils from primary and secondary schools took part in competitions relating to computer programming, digital photography and website design.

SAFE-SI participated in accompanying activities with the aim to discuss if and how adults, parents and teachers are able to communicate with their children through the internet.

Two very successful events were organised. First, a round table entitled: "The phenomena of safer internet and communication among adults and youngsters through the internet".  This brought together experts in the field, as well as parents, teachers and children.

For the first time at this fair, kids were very actively involved in the discussion and expressed their opinions publicly.  Participants have above all stressed the crucial role of the families who should be responsible for educating about the benefits and risks associated with the internet. The need to raise awareness of parents about the internet in general and specifically regarding safety issues was thus stressed by the participants.

The second event, a workshop entitled "ABCD Internet for adults- we know, what about you?", gathered together prominent special guests, such as the Slovenian Human Rights Ombudsman and the Director-General of the Directorate for Information Society within the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology. These special guests participated in a quiz on the internet and its safer use.

The quiz was developed by a group of youngsters who are involved in a support group called "Telephone - Youngsters to Youngsters" within MISSS, the Youth Informative Counselling Centre of Slovenia. Both competitors showed a high level of knowledge about safety issues on the internet. In the the end, Mr. Matjaž Hanžek, the Slovenian Human Rights Ombudsman won and was thus appointed for the first Slovenian safer internet ambassador.
