INHOPE stakeholders face challenges together

An INHOPE event entitled "Online danger: facing the challenges together" brought together more than 70 stakeholders from 24 countries and highlighted the need for cooperation to successfully tackle the problem of illegal content on the internet.

INHOPE opened the conference by sharing experiences and challenges of running the hotline network for the last 6 years. Each member of the INHOPE Board stressed the importance of working with stakeholders to achieve a safer internet. The viewpoint of these stakeholders was then presented, with Insafe, the European Commission, Euroispa and Interpol showing how their organisations are working to deliver internet safety.

The afternoon session used case studies to showcase the power of collaboration. Hotlines from Canada, Iceland and Denmark presented examples of successful partnerships with child welfare groups such as Save the Children and Child Find Manitoba.

Building a strong relationship with government is one of the criteria for INHOPE membership and the approaches of hotlines in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands were examined. Among the panel there was full agreement that backing of government is an essential part of establishing credibility and influencing future policies.

Industry were very visible at the event with representatives from MCI, Microsoft and Vodafone as well as European ISP association Euroispa. The German, Greek and Hungarian hotlines showed how they have engaged industry both on an operational and strategic level.

The final case study focussed on the importance of strong links with law enforcement. Hotlines from the US and the UK presented alongside law enforcement from their respective countries to show the success stories that were a direct result of working together.

A formal evaluation from attendees awarded the conference in excess of 85% satisfaction levels. This gives INHOPE a strong platform to build on for future events of this kind and meet the challenges of delivering a safer internet into the future.
