Australians wise up to IT

A youth internet safety campaign, ‘Wise Up to IT’ has been created by NetAlert in Australia and will be launched on 7 April 2006.

The Wise Up to IT campaign aims to confront existing attitudes and behaviour of young people’s internet use, educate young people about internet safety, address the concerns of young people, provide internet safety advice, to deliver NetAlert’s key messages and raise awareness of NetAlert’s resources.

Youth in Australia have been heavily involved in the early planning stages, during an intensive 6 month research period.

Wise Up to IT provides four dramatised case studies concentrating on online scams and identity theft, cyber bullying, grooming and luring and cyber stalking.  These are presented on DVD and outline the dangers the victim experiences and the strategies and solutions they undertook to keep themselves safe.

Other materials are included on the DVD to support the case studies and assist young people with internet safety concerns.

NetAlert has not only worked closely with youth, but also with several law enforcement groups in Australia.  These include the Online Child Sex Exploitation Team (OCSET), Taskforce Argost and the Australian High Tech Crime Centre (AHTCC) in order to source meaningful and relevant case studies.

The youth resource will be distributed by NetAlert through the national Expo program and in special youth-specific Expo events as well as through existing communication channels such as the Helpline.  The resource will be versatile enough to be viewed in alternative mediums, such as on the web.

The launch of the Wise Up to IT campaign will take place on 7 April 2006 at a secondary school in Queensland.  Students, teachers, parents, local law enforcement groups and politicians will be present for the launch.  Youth will be involved in activities on the day.
