STOP cyberbullying campaign launched in Poland

A third “Child on the Web” campaign was launched at the end of January in Poland. Whereas the first campaign addressed the problem of dangerous contacts online and the second covered the problem of children coming into contact with harmful content online, the third one concerns the problem of cyberbullying.

The "STOP cyberbullying" campaign organised by the Nobody’s Children Foundation and ad agency VA Strategic Communication includes TV and radio spots, and press advertisements. As a part of the campaign a 2-minute video was also produced.  It shows an event through the perspectives of the victim, bully and witness, and is designed to serve as a basis for discussion in the classroom. The video is accompanied by lesson plans on cyberbullying.

The campaign aims to promote the helpline (www.helpline.org.pl), where children, parents and professionals working with children can raise concerns about dangerous situations they encounter online. All educational resources from the campaign can be downloaded from the website of the “Child on the Web” campaign: www.dzieckowsieci.pl.

The problem of cyberbullying, unfortunately, seems to be quite news worthy at present in Poland. According to research conducted by the Nobody’s Children Foundation and Gemius Agency every second Polish Internet user aged 12-17 (52%) has had some contact with abuse on the Web or via mobile phones. 47% of the child respondents have experienced crude name-calling; 21% have been humiliated or mocked;  16% have been intimidated and blackmailed.

These alarming statistics made it easier to convince the media to participate in the campaign and raise awareness of the problem among young people, parents and educators.  So far about 35 different media producers have agreed to support the initiative by broadcasting the TV spot or publishing press advertisements on a non-profit basis.
