Safer Internet Day Celebrations in Malta

Safer Internet Day 2008 was celebrated on 26 February at Playmobil Funpark in Hal Far. Although a little later than the rest of Europe, the activity turned out to be a great success. The response from the children who participated was positive, as was the response from the media representatives that covered the event.

The celebrations started off with an introduction by the Project Co-ordinator on Internet Safety who gave the background to the morning’s activity.  An hour long infotainment session followed.  The group of 130 students coming from schools in the Cottonera region were divided into 10 teams.  The teams were each represented by an animal.  The session included a discussion, a jumbled up jigsaw-puzzle game and a quiz about Internet Safety.  The children were enthusiastic and participated wholeheartedly in the activities while their teachers assisted them in their different groups.  During break time and at the end of the activity the children could browse the Internet while supervised and practise hand painting with stencils and markers provided by Faber Castell.

SID in Malta - presentation The presentation of prizes to the winners of the artistic logo/slogan competition that ran from October 2007 until January 2008 followed. This competition was kindly sponsored by Faber Castell represented by AF Enterprises and Playmobil Malta.  The three winners won educational toys and materials from these two companies.  Joe Gerada CEO of the Foundation for Social Welfare Services and Yvonne Mallia Director of Operations for Agenzija Appogg presented the prizes.  The event ended with the cutting of Safer Internet cake.  This was cut by three students coming from each of the schools that attended.

This activity served as a great way to pass the Internet Safety awareness message on to the children. Great thanks go to the sponsors Faber Castell and Playmobil, and all the relevant stakeholders who supported this event! At the end a pack full of resources provided by MIIIT (Ministry for Investment, Industry and Information Technology), responsible for the awareness node, was given to each student who had attended.  A representative from the office of the Commissioner for Children and the Education Department Operations Director for non-state schools attended the event.  We are sure that the children will treasure and hopefully practice all that they learned.
