Safer Internet Day in Slovenia – “a huge success”

The Slovenian Awareness Node SAFE-SI actively participated in this year’s Safer Internet Day. The main topic of the node's campaign was young people’s addiction to modern communication technologies. Posters and postcards for youngsters and leaflets for parents on the topic of internet, videogames and mobile phone addiction were therefore created and delivered to all Slovenian primary and high schools for further distribution among children and parents. The message of this campaign was: “Don’t neglect off-line contacts with those you care about.”

addiction banner On Safer Internet Day Trnovo primary school (OŠ Trnovo) in Ljubljana hosted a round table discussion, when experts, teachers, youngsters shared their experience and advice on the topic of ICT addiction. The main target group of the event were parents. The most prominent guests at this event were well-known Slovenian writer Mr. Bogdan Novak, Mrs. Vlasta Nussdorfer, Higher State Prosecutor, who is also very active in the field of child protection, and Mr. Miha Kramli, a leading psychotherapist dealing with internet addiction. Media interest in the round table was very high –all major national TV and radio stations and internet media carried reports of the event.
Project materials were available in the main street of the Slovenian capital Ljubljana throughout the whole of the 12 February, as well as in three major cinema centres in Slovenia (in cooperation with Si-mobil Vodafone).

On 13 February, for approximately two hours, Internet users were given the possibility to ask questions and/or to express their concerns regarding Internet safety and internet addiction through a special online application (MSN messenger offered by Microsoft). Two experts: one from project SAFE-SI and a psychotherapist dealing with internet addiction were available for questions.

The high level of involvement by industrial stakeholders, such as Microsoft, UPC Telemach and Si.mobil-Vodafone as well as governmental bodies, such as the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology, Human Rights Ombudsman and Information Commissioner, is a clear sign of the importance of this topic in Slovenian society.
