Swedish Minister visits web community

On Safer Internet Day young Swedish members of the web community Lunarstorm got the opportunity to meet Mr. Leif Pagrotsky, Minister for Education, Research and Culture.

This was not the Minister's first visit to Lunarstorm. He revealed that he himself used to be a member of the web community, after he was invited by his daughter a few years ago. He enjoyed his time as a member but after a while he found it to be quite time consuming.

He advises parents to take an active interest in their children’s life online and learn more about internet for youth. The minister believes more in dialogue between children and grown-ups than technical solutions like filtering or blocking to create a safer internet.

Mr. Pagrotsky got many questions regarding his views on internet safety for children and young people:

15-year old girl:
- Hi Leif, What can I do to be safer online? Is it safe to trust people I meet in a chat room?
Leif Pagrotsky:
- I’d say you could never completely trust anyone you meet in a chat room. Be careful not to reveal any personal information that can be misused by others.

11-year old girl:
- Hi there! At what age do you think it is ok to start using Internet?
Leif Pagrotsky:
- It is never to early to start, but be sure to bring your parents with you when you start exploring the Internet.

He encouraged children to follow his example and try the interactive SAFT quiz on internet safety presented by the Swedish awareness node.

There were also those who took the opportunity to ask personal questions about his life as a minister.

Young Swedes spend a lot of time on the Internet and virtual meeting places are becoming an increasingly important part of their social life. The oldest and most popular Swedish web community is Lunarstorm. With 1 200 000 members, more than 360 000 users logging on daily exchanging millions of messages each day the website is like a large youth recreation centre – but with few grown-ups.

The average member is 18 years old, and he or she is not alone – approximately 80% of all Swedes aged 12-24 are members. Lunarstorm offers a place for young people to chat with friends, discuss different topics of interest or to write their own web diary.
