Young Safer Internet Danish Ambassadors join the blogathon9 February 2006
On Safer Internet Day 2006, pupils from a Danish school class were appointed Safer Internet Ambassadors. They illustrated their function as role models for other children on the international Insafe blog with their advice on the safest use of the internet. |
"One has to behave well on the internet and not give out ones phone number and address. If you are bullied you must tell an adult that can help you with solving the problem. So remember always to use the internet sensibly."
These are some of the pieces of advice from 27 Danish pupils that one can read on the Insafe blog. On Safer Internet Day, pupils from a Danish school aged 11- 13 participated in the global "Blogathon” and were appointed Safer Internet Ambassadors by last year’s winner of the Safer Internet storytelling competition. The event took place in the Danish Film House in Copenhagen. Among the participants were journalists, members of the industry and organisations that work with children. The pupils also took part in a Children’s Summit with the participation of Habbohotel.dk, Children’s Welfare’s chat counselling and the EU-award winning counselling website for young girls, Girltalk.dk. And they made their own films on internet safety issues that will be available on the Danish Media Council’s website.
The event was covered widely in the Danish media with for example two broadcasts on Danish television with interviews with the Safer Internet Ambassadors and the Chairman of the Danish Media Council.
With their newly attained status as Safer Internet Ambassadors, the pupils will now function as role models for the youngest members of the Danish population. They will give advise and present safer internet best practice to other Danish children.
Throughout January 2006, the pupils have been practising for this task through personal blogs. In this connection, the Danish Media Council for Children and Young People created educational material and made presentations to classes. The aim was to supplement the pupils’ playful approach to their blogs with an understanding of related safety issues. The educational material can be downloaded from the Danish Media Council’s website.
The pupils are also participating in a competition in which the best student blog is selected by the Danish Media Council. Here, the Safer Internet Ambassadors will compete with two other school classes who have also created their personal blogs with the aid of the Danish Media Council. Four winners will be chosen and each winner will receive a small prize, and a direct link to their blogs will be placed on various Danish websites, including that of the Danish Media Council.
