A groundbreaking new European study, released today at a major EU conference hosted by the Council of Europe in Strasbourg, sheds light on how teachers use digital games in the classroom with their pupils for learning purposes. The conference was opened by the European Commissioner for Education and Culture, Jan Figel, underlining the importance of the study. It covers commercial as well as “serious” games. It was carried out by European Schoolnet, a network of 31 Ministries of Education, commissioned by the Interactive Software Federation of Europe (ISFE).

Today the Insafe network, European network of Safer Internet Centres, is celebrating Safer Internet Day for the eighth consecutive year. This is the occasion of the year to join our efforts in making the internet a better place for our children and young people. Since the first edition of SID in 2004, interest has grown tremendously world wide to reach all five continents and almost 70 countries, from Canada to South Korea and Russia to Kenya, including all 27 countries of the European Union.

Since July 2011, Lithuanian children who faced luring, cyber-bullying, harassing, harmful content or other bad or intimidating experience over the internet will receive help. The Communications Regulatory Authority of the Republic of Lithuania (further RRT) has concluded a cooperation agreement for the public establishment of a “ChildLine” on help provision; “ChildLine” will also function as a safer internet helpline. Operating in the majority of European countries, the helpline number 116111 will be accessible to the children of Lithuania.

Today the Insafe network began a two-day meeting in the Carpathian mountain resort of Sinaia. Famous for its fabulous scenery and its proximity to Dracula’s castle in Transylvania, this is also the ideal spot to bring together Insafe members to discuss current and future actions of the network. The main topic of these two days’ discussions is the theme and slogan for Safer Internet Day 2012.
