Social networks in Bulgaria formed a best practice initiative group On 2 February, in the context of the forthcoming Safer Internet Day 2010, the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre organised a working meeting with owners of the most popular among teenagers social networking / dating sites to discuss possible ways to introduce the European Safer Social Networking Principles in the country. The deputy chairman of the State Agency for Child Protection Kalin Kamenov, the chief of the Cybercrime Unit at the general Directorate for Fighting Organised Crime Yavor Kolev, as well as official representatives of the Ministry of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications and the Ministry of Culture participated in the meeting.
The participants were presented the findings of a recent study conducted by the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre on the best and worst practices of the social networking sites in Bulgaria. Three recent cases of grooming and sexual abuse of minors identified by paedophiles using information easily available in social networking sites were cited as a reason for rising concern and urgent need to ask the sites to raise the measures of online protection of minors.
The participants were briefed about the European Safer Social Networking Principles and the recommendations of the Safer Internet Centre for increasing the online protection of minors. Social networking sites’ owners presented the measures they have introduced or plan to introduce in order to make their websites safer for users under 18 years of age.
Owners of the 7 sites Aha.bg. Sladur.com. Sofianci.com, Limpa.bg, Impulse.bg, Teenproblem.net, Flirt4e.com with a combined number of registered users of 2.7 million among which more than 800,000 under the age of 18 took part in the discussion.
The websites representatives agreed to form an initiative group for developing and recommending online protection measures and sharing best practice under the co-ordination of the Safer Internet Centre.
Sofinci.com proposed to establish an Association of social networking /dating sites who commit themselves to adhere to the European Safer Social Networking Principles and to introduce a special mark to be displayed on their sites and a list of those sites to be published on the safer Internet Centre website.
The owner of Sofianci.com already presented a list with 11 protection measures he plans to introduce in the site before the end of February. Aha.bg committed themselves to also present their own plan for additional protection measures.
