Finland hosts 24 hour Christmas Chat The first Manteli (Almond) chat was arranged in 2003, and it has been arranged on a yearly basis ever since. It is a large scale 24 hour support chat that is organized during Christmas simultaneously in all relevant online services popular among children and young people.
A group of "habbos" Manteli chat is organized in popular online services (Habbo, IRC-Gallery and Suomi24). The chats are aimed at children and young people in virtual social networks, where they are able to increase the visibility, presence and availability of reliable adults (signed with a tag "M" for Manteli) in the social surroundings. This improves the experience and actual safety in the online services and has also been highly appreciated and welcomed by the young people. There are a lot of vulnerable children who desperately need support during the Christmas. Some are simply lonely and need someone to talk to, whereas others are very vulnerable with severe problems.
The all voluntary chat support team are trained to face and help children online. Save the Children Finland organizes continuous training for such volunteers which includes online safety related issues. An open source learning and sharing communication platform is also used to communicate and train the chat support team. Manteli chats have also been developed further and shorter chats are organized on a monthly basis too.
