About our SID activities

Latvian SIC wil be organising the following Safer Internet Day 2024 activities:

  • "Mind Games", a national online quiz for secondary school students about internet safety, will be organised and dedicated to various aspects of internet safety. The online quiz will be the main SID event on February 6, 2024.
  • Competitions for schools  and libraries will be organised in February 2024, inviting schools, libraries, and youth centres to create an environmental object or space in the school called the "Our Safe Internet Network." We will publish ideas and helpful resources for implementing activities in January. To share with others and showcase works, we encourage schools to share photos of the space on social media using the hashtag #SID2024. The most successful entries will receive useful prizes.
  • Online tests for pupils to assess their internet safety knowledge will be launched in three age groups (1st to 3rd grade, 4th to 6th grade, 7th  to 9th grade) to assess students' understanding of internet safety and determine their knowledge level.
  • "Pupils educate pupils" initiative. On Safer Internet Day, we encourage older students to organise lessons for younger pupils to discuss and explore the importance of respectful communication and relationships on the internet. Latvian SIC will provide online resources for use in lessons and share useful tips for conducting activities.
  • National SID activities across the country. We will invite schools, libraries, and youth centres to organise local activities in their region, parish, city, and district and register their events to be included on the Latvian Safer Internet Day activity map.
  • Educational materials for students about internet safety will be provided to schools. For instance, lesson plans and teaching materials will be used to educate students on internet safety in schools, libraries, or youth centres.

What we are doing to create a better internet...

We encourage not only youngsters but also adults to think about online safety. Pedagogues are invited to use the Safer Internet Centre's resources to raise awareness in schools about the safe and responsible use of technologies. Society will be informed about the ways in which each of us can make the internet a better place.

About us

The work of the Latvian Safer Internet Centre (SIC) is coordinated by the Latvian Internet Association with partners the State Inspectorate for Protection of Children's Rights and The Local Governments Training Centre. The SIC has three main tasks:

  • Informing and educating children, adolescents, teachers and parents on the safety of internet content, for example the potential threats on the internet, and how to the use internet in a more responsible and wise manner.

  • Ensuring a reporting facility about illegal online content and breaches online (any report can be anonymous). The reports are processed and, if appropriate, sent for examination to the State Police or the INHOPE Association.

  • Ensuring a helpline, 116111, of the State Inspectorate for Protection of Children's Rights, a possibility for everyone, but especially children and youngsters, to turn to for help on any issue, including internet matters.
