About our SID activities

The Finnish Safer Internet Day has been realised as a week-long media literacy event since 2013, known as Mediataitoviikko or "Media Literacy Week". This year, we celebrate from 5-11 February 2024. We have over 60 partner organisations providing campaigns, events, educational materials, and communication support to promote media skills development. We at KAVI function as the organising party, coordinating and providing curated information on available materials and events for all professionals working in schools, early education, libraries, youth centres, museums, companies and NGOs who want to participate.

Every year, around 2,000 registered professionals participate in Media Literacy Week. Participants are encouraged to engage, and they will have access to a diverse range of materials. In January, we will publish the online Media Literacy Magazine 2024. In addition, we collect timeless media educational resources in five different booklets, which are themed by different age groups. The booklets aim to encourage using media educational resources all year round. A communication campaign, which will run from January until the end of Media Literacy Week, will promote our partner organisations' media education materials and events. You can follow the campaign via our social media sites. The materials and events will also be compiled on the Media Literacy Week website.

What we are doing to create a better internet...

Together with our partners, we have been planning a comprehensive and engaging media literacy theme week on media literacy. Like every Media Literacy Week, we will reach different target audiences. We will emphasise promoting accessible and equal media education across all age groups. For us, the Media Literacy Week is an opportunity to highlight the ongoing national effort in media education.

In today's media-saturated age, well-being has become an increasingly integral aspect of media literacy. This year, the online magazine and new materials specifically focus on mental wellbeing, resilience and inclusion. The materials also provide information on many other topical issues, such as artificial intelligence, algorithms and inclusive media education that consider the diverse needs of different target groups. For SID 2024, the Finnish Safer Internet Centre will have an online webinar for parents focusing on youth media literacy and safety skills online.
